UPS Teamster Retirement Guide: Pensions, Service Benefits & Health Coverage
By TeamstersGPT · Published July 25, 2026
How UPS Teamster retirement works: service pensions by years of service, part-time pension formulas, retiree health coverage, and Social Security basics.
Retirement is one of the biggest reasons people fight to keep a strong union contract. For UPS Teamsters, your retirement is built from more than one piece: a Teamster or UPS/IBT pension, possible retiree health coverage, your 401(k) savings, and — for most of us — Social Security on top. This guide breaks down what your contract actually says about each piece, and clearly separates that from general background so you know what's a hard contract fact and what's just helpful context.
Generally speaking, "retirement" simply means withdrawing from active working life, usually once you're eligible for pension or public benefits [14]. But for a UPS Teamster, the details — how many years you need, how much you'll get, and what health coverage follows you — are spelled out in your specific agreement. Because those details vary a lot by region and by full-time vs. part-time status, always confirm the numbers for your supplement or rider.
Full-Time Service Pensions: What Years Of Service Get You
Many full-time UPS Teamsters covered by the UPS/IBT Full-Time Employee Pension Plan get a service pension — a benefit tied to your years of full-time service, not just your age. Under Article 34 of the National Master Agreement, the service benefit is payable after 20, 25, 30, and 35 years of full-time service [1].
The baseline monthly amounts in the National Master were [1]:
- 35 years, any age: $3,900
- 30 or more years, any age: $3,400 (plus $100/yr for years over 30, up to $3,900)
- 25 years, under age 57: $2,000
- 25 years, age 57 or older: $2,500 (plus $100/yr for years over 25, up to a $3,500 maximum)
The current agreement then enhanced those amounts effective January 1, 2024 [1]:
- 35 years, any age: $4,700
- 30 or more years, any age: $4,200 (plus $100/yr for years over 30, up to $4,700)
- 25 years, up to age 57: $2,400
- 25 years, age 57 or older: $2,900 (plus $100/yr for years over 25, up to $4,700)
Several regional supplements carry the same structure. The Atlantic Area, Central Region, and Southern Region supplements all describe the identical 20/25/30/35-year service benefit and the $2,000–$3,900 baseline table [5][9][13]. The Central Region also lists its own enhancement effective January 1, 2024 (35 years → $4,700; 30+ years → $4,200 plus $100/yr up to $4,700) [9]. Because these overlap heavily with the National Master, the practical takeaway is: the service pension is real and generous, but you must check the exact table in your supplement or rider.
How Full-Time Service Credit Is Counted
Under the UPS/IBT Plan, full-time employees earn one year of Credited Service for each 1,801 paid hours in Covered Employment in a calendar year, with partial years granted in monthly increments (one month for 150+ hours in that month) [13].
For service pensions specifically, a different weekly rule applies. You earn one week of service credit for any week with at least one hour of Covered Employment, and then [5][13]:
- 0–19 weeks in a calendar year → no service credit for that year
- 20–39 weeks → a fraction of a year (weeks ÷ 40)
- 40 weeks → one full year of service credit
The service-pension benefit is generally unreduced at Normal Retirement Age (65) with 5 years of vesting, or at age 62 with 20 years of Credited Service; payments can start as early as age 50 with 5 years of vesting but are reduced 6% per year for each year before Normal Retirement Age [12]. There's also an additional monthly benefit accrual set at $185.00 per year for calendar years 2024 through 2028 under the UPS/IBT Plan [12].
Part-Time Pensions
Part-timers who aren't covered by a separate Teamster pension plan build a benefit under the UPS Pension Plan. The accrual formula climbed over the years and, effective August 1, 2023, increased to $65.00 for each year of future Credited Service, up to a maximum of 35 years. If you were in Covered Employment on August 1, 2023, you get the $65 formula for the entire 2023 plan year [6][10].
The part-time total monthly service pension benefit is [6][10]:
- $2,450 for retirement at any age after 35 years of part-time Credited Service
- $2,100 for retirement at any age after 30 years
- $1,750 for retirement at age 60 with 25 years
- $1,450 for retirement at any age with 25 years (based on $58.00 per year of Credited Service)
Part-timers earn one year of Credited Service for 750 or more paid hours, with partial credit for lower hour totals (six months for 375–500 hours; nine months for 501–749 hours) [10].
Local Pension Variations (Latin America / Local 769)
Some units are on different plans and dollar amounts. The Local 769 UPS Latin America (Fleet Service) supplement, for example, sets its own monthly service pension for anyone retiring after January 1, 2024: $2,450 at any age after 35 years, $2,100 at any age after 30 years, and $2,000 at age 60 with 25 years, plus a $1,250 benefit at any age with 25 years (based on $50/year) [2][3]. Its accrual rate rises to $75.00 for each year of future Credited Service after January 1, 2024, and a memorandum adds a further enhancement ($2,500 at age 60 with 25 years) for members hitting that milestone on or before July 31, 2028 [2]. This is a clear example of why you can't assume the National Master numbers apply to your unit.
Pension Fund Contributions
Your pension is funded by employer contributions, and some contracts describe exactly how. In the Upstate/West New York supplement, effective August 1, 2023 the Employer contributes for paid hours (up to a weekly maximum) to the New York State Teamsters Pension and Retirement Fund for both full-time and part-time employees, with part-time contributions due by the 10th of the following month [7]. Notably, no contributions are due on peak-season part-time helpers (off-the-street hires, roughly Nov. 1–Jan. 15) unless the Company retains or rehires the helper within 60 days [7].
The Southwest Package/Sort Rider even ties unused vacation to your pension at retirement: a retiring employee entitled to prorated unused vacation also gets a separate cash payment equal to the pension contributions the Company would have made had you used all that vacation before retiring (the contract's example: 40 hours × $6.60/hr = $264.00) [11].
Retiree Health Coverage
Retiring doesn't automatically mean losing health coverage, but the rules are specific and have changed over time.
Part-time retiree coverage under the National Master applied to part-timers (not covered by a Union plan) who retired between August 1, 2002 and the cutoff — this section does not apply to anyone who retires on or after January 1, 2014. For those later retirees, coverage shifts to the Central States Health & Welfare Plan [8]. To have qualified, a part-timer had to (among other things) be at least 55 years old with at least 25 years of part-time service, not yet Medicare-eligible, and covered as an active employee by a UPS plan at retirement [8]. Local 710's supplement mirrors these same requirements and routes later retirees to Central States [4].
For full-time retirees in some regions, coverage moved to region-specific funds. In Upstate/West New York, current retirees moved to the terms of the Memorandum Concerning UPS Sponsored Plans as of January 1, 2014, and eligible employees retiring on or after that date get retiree medical benefits through the New York State Teamsters Council Health Fund for UPS Retirees [7]. Southwest-region members moved to the Teamsters Western Region and Local 177 Health Care Plan [11]. The point: which fund covers your retirement depends on your contract and region.
Social Security And Your Own Savings (General Background)
The contract pension is only one leg of the stool. Generally speaking, most UPS Teamsters will also collect Social Security. You can typically start monthly Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62 if you've worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years [16], and you can apply anytime between 62 and 70 — claiming later generally increases your monthly amount [17]. This is general public-program information, not a term of your UPS contract.
On top of that, your contract provides access to the UPS/Teamsters National 401(k) tax-deferred savings plan, with the employer withholding agreed amounts from your earnings into an account in your name [3]. General financial-planning wisdom is that combining a pension, Social Security, and personal savings gives you the most secure retirement [15][18] — but how much you personally need is an individual question worth planning early [18].
What To Do Next
Your exact pension amount, eligibility age, and retiree health fund all depend on your specific supplement, rider, and which pension plan covers you — the differences above are real and they matter. Before you set a retirement date:
- Pull your own supplement/rider and read its pension and retiree-health sections carefully.
- Request an official benefit estimate from your pension fund (don't rely on ballpark math).
- Talk to your steward or Business Agent about vesting, service credit, and any early-retirement reductions.
- Ask TeamstersGPT with your supplement selected so the numbers match your actual agreement.
