Your Rights as a UPS Teamster Under the Southern Supplement

By TeamstersGPT · Published June 7, 2026

A plain-language guide to UPS Teamster rights under the 2023-2028 National Master Agreement and Southern Region Supplemental Agreement, covering pay, seniority, grievances, and more.

If you work for UPS in the Southern Region, your rights come from two stacked documents: the National Master UPS Agreement (NMA) 2023–2028 and the Southern Region Supplemental Agreement 2023–2028. Together they set the floor — and sometimes the ceiling — for everything from your paycheck to how a grievance gets resolved. This guide walks through the most important rights you hold under those two agreements.

Important note on sources: The contract excerpts available for this article cover the National Master Agreement and several supplements and riders — but not the full text of the Southern Region Supplement itself. Where the Southern Supplement's specific language is not available in the excerpts below, this article relies on publicly available information [9] and clearly labeled general background. Contract-specific claims are drawn from the NMA excerpts and cited accordingly.

How the Two Agreements Work Together

The NMA is the foundation. Every UPS Teamster in the country — no matter what region — is covered by it [4]. The Southern Region Supplemental Agreement sits on top of the NMA and adds, modifies, or clarifies rights for workers in the Southern Region specifically [8].

A key rule governs conflicts between the two: any lesser condition in a Supplement is automatically replaced by the better NMA standard [4]. Flip side: if your Supplement gives you something better than the NMA (say, a stronger vacation schedule or a tighter overtime trigger), you keep the better benefit [4].

Practically, this means you should always check both documents when a question comes up. Never assume the NMA alone is your answer.

Recognition and Your Bargaining Unit

The Employer recognizes the IBT and affiliated Local Unions as the exclusive representatives of all employees in covered classifications [4]. You and every other covered UPS worker — full-time and part-time — constitute one (1) bargaining unit [4].

When UPS needs to hire, the Union gets equal opportunity to refer applicants, though UPS is not required to hire Union referrals [4]. If UPS uses an employment agency, UPS pays the fee — not you [4].

New employee orientations: Business agents and/or stewards are permitted to attend your orientation to talk about Union membership benefits. UPS must give the Local Union at least one week's notice of the date, time, and location [4].

Work Jurisdiction — Supervisors Cannot Do Your Work

Article 3, Section 7 of the NMA prohibits supervisors from performing bargaining unit work [3]. This is one of the most commonly violated — and most commonly grieved — provisions at UPS.

Additionally, the Employer must respect jurisdictional rules of the Union and cannot direct non-bargaining-unit employees to perform your work [3]. UPS also cannot combine work currently performed by members of one Teamster Local with work performed by members of another Local into a single job [3].

New Technology — Your Work Stays Your Work

When UPS introduces new technology that replaces, enhances, or modifies bargaining unit work, bargaining unit employees perform that work [2]. The Employer is also required to provide whatever training is needed to use the new technology [2].

This provision supersedes any conflicting Supplemental, Rider, or Addendum language on the same subject [2].

Seniority

Generally speaking, seniority is the backbone of nearly every UPS Teamster right — from which shifts you can bid, to layoff order, to vacation scheduling. The NMA sets broad seniority principles, while the specifics (probationary periods, seniority lists, layoff and recall rules) are largely governed by your Supplement.

The Southern Region Supplement addresses seniority in detail. As a general matter under Southern Supplement practice, a new employee works a thirty (30) working day probationary period before seniority is established [9].

The NMA's work-assignment section confirms that the Employer must respect seniority in the assignment of work, and cannot circumvent bargaining unit seniority by using outside employees [3].

Maintenance of Standards

One of the most powerful — and often overlooked — protections in UPS contracts is the Maintenance of Standards clause. While this specific language appears in the Western Region Supplement excerpt available to us [1], it reflects a standard provision that also appears in the Southern Supplement (general background):

  • Wages, guaranteed hours, overtime differentials, and working conditions shall not fall below the highest standards in effect at the time the Agreement was signed [1].
  • Conditions must be improved wherever the Agreement specifically provides for improvement [1].
  • This provision does not give UPS the right to impose wages or hours that fall below the Agreement's minimums [1].
  • Inadvertent or bona fide errors by either side do not automatically constitute a violation [1].
  • Any dispute over Maintenance of Standards goes through the grievance procedure [1].

Pay, Training Premiums, and Payroll Options

Training Premium

If you are a Teamster-represented employee who voluntarily trains other employees, you are entitled to a $1.00 per hour training premium for each hour spent training [2]. Note: drivers training helpers on-route and two-on-the-car rides for route knowledge do not qualify for this premium [2].

A National Training Committee exists to hear and resolve disputes about training; unresolved disputes go to the National Master Grievance Committee [2].

How You Get Paid

You have the option of:

  • Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)
  • UPS check card payment system
  • Paper payroll check [3]

New employees (hired after the ratification date) must choose either EFT or a check card, unless prohibited by state law. This election is made during orientation [3].

No bargaining unit employee currently in the payroll department will be laid off or lose their position as a result of this payroll modernization [3].

Feeder Drivers — Special Provisions

If you are a feeder driver, you have several specific protections under the NMA and Supplement:

  • Layover reimbursement: On layover runs, UPS must reimburse you for the full cost of food and lodging at the layover point, upon presentation of proper receipts [1].
  • Triple/oversized trailer premium: A feeder driver operating triple trailers, or two (2) trailers of forty feet or more, receives $6.00 per day or $0.75 per hour for all hours worked — whichever is greater — over the base feeder rate [1].
  • Miscellaneous expense reimbursement: Any approved miscellaneous expenses must be reimbursed within ten (10) working days of presenting proper receipts. Delays trigger penalties under Article 17 of the National Master Agreement [1].

Grievances — How to Fight Back

The Foundation: No Unilateral Action

The Union and UPS agree that there shall be no strike, picketing, lockout, tie-up, or legal proceedings without first exhausting all settlement means provided in the Agreement [5].

Who Controls the Grievance

The Union is the exclusive representative of employees in grievance processing, including hearings and final decisions [5]. You, as an individual employee, do not have an independent right to invoke grievance procedures on your own — unless the Union is guilty of arbitrary or wrongful conduct in its duty of fair representation [5].

Merit Screening

The Union is not required to process a grievance it believes lacks merit [5]. This is standard duty-of-fair-representation territory: if you believe your grievance has merit and the Union disagrees, you may raise that concern with your Local's business agent.

NMA-Only Grievances

Grievances that cite only National Master Agreement provisions and cannot be resolved at the UPS Labor-Management Committee level are referred directly to the National Grievance Committee [5].

Key Practical Steps

  1. Talk to your steward immediately — time limits for filing grievances are real and enforced.
  2. Document everything: dates, times, witnesses, what was said or done.
  3. Identify whether your issue arises under the NMA, the Southern Supplement, or both — this determines which panel hears it.

Military Leave Rights

If you take USERRA-qualified military leave, UPS must notify your Local Union within five (5) business days of receiving your notification [6].

On vacation: you are credited with the vacation you would have accrued during military leave, and that vacation is restored on a pro-rata basis depending on the quarter you return [6]. No fractional day is lost — any fraction rounds up to the next whole number [6].

Spousal Transfer Rights: If an active military member is transferred to a different geographic location and their spouse works for UPS, the spouse may request a transfer to the same area. The transfer is approved if: (a) an appropriate opening exists that no existing employee has the right to claim; (b) job classification seniority is end-tailed; and (c) company seniority is retained for vacation weeks, holiday eligibility, and benefits [6].

Where to Find Your Full Contract

The IBT publishes all 2023–2028 UPS agreements, including the Southern Region Supplemental Agreement, on the official Teamsters website [7]. Full copies are also available through the UPS Teamsters app [10] and on the UPS Teamsters United website [8].

What to Do Next

Your best first step is always to talk to your steward — they know your Local's specific history and how these provisions have been applied in your building. If you want to dig deeper, pull up both the NMA and the Southern Region Supplement side by side. You can find both at the IBT's official agreements page [7] or through the UPS Teamsters app [10]. Can a supervisor do my bargaining unit work?
No. The NMA prohibits supervisors from performing bargaining unit work [#3]. This is a grievable violation — document the incident and contact your steward immediately.
Am I entitled to a training premium if I train another employee?
Yes — Teamster-represented employees who voluntarily train others on a voluntary basis receive a $1.00 per hour training premium for each hour spent training [#2]. Drivers training helpers on-route or doing two-on-the-car rides for route knowledge are excluded from this premium [#2].
What happens to my vacation if I go on military leave?
You are credited with the vacation you would have accrued during the leave period, restored on a pro-rata basis based on the quarter you return [#6]. Any fractional day rounds up to the next whole number [#6].
